Masahiro Sakurai: Hello, here we are once again with Super Smash Bros! My name is Masahiro Sakurai, Director of Sora Ltd. Today I’m here to receive the Grand Prize. I want to thank you for this.

We have been given many various rewards in the past, and achieved many goals. Such as breaking record sales at Nintendo. We are said to be one of the main causes of the increase of sales for the latest consoles. This achievement was not only made possible by those in Japan, but people from all around the world. It’s amazing to be up here receiving awards like this, like some soft of famous movie. Sorry if I seem a little awkward, or seem a little out of place.

We work and create so much varied content with Smash Bros. The great minds here, create so many various ideas and content. We have almost achieved a record number of collaborations between various companies and characters over the years. And we are still going to be continuing to make the game better through DLC, and expand. There are many various things like this we plan to do in the future.

Lastly, I have quite a personal story I’d like to talk about, and bring our attention towards. I’m very sorry if this seems out of place, or strange to say, but let me say this to those who have Super Smash Bros. on Switch. Please know that when making this game President Iwatasan, this is the last mission he threw at me.

I want us to rejoice together, and remember him. Even though he’s not here today because some humans pass away, but Iwatasan, he has passed on his teachings, and studies onto others, and I want his beliefs to continue and live on. I’ll do my best. I often ask myself,” What can I do now?” But I just look forward and I strive to do the best that I can do, and continue with our creative ideas. I think it’s important that we do as much as possible.

Therefore, the DLC, we have decided to continue to create new DLC, with a variety of new content. We will continue to create new fighters for you since we have the opportunity to do so. I will continue to do my best. I hope you will support me in the future. Thank you very much.

Rewards

Super Smash Bros. has developed a cult following with gamers continuing to play the old iterations competitively. The most recent game, Super Smash Brothers Ultimate (more commonly known as Smash Ultimate) for the Nintendo Switch has already sold 15 million copies. Super Ultimate is the only title to win multiple awards at the Japan Game Awards 2019 which is held annually at TGS (Tokyo Game Show.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate won the Grand Award, Award for Excellence, Best Sales Award, and Global Award Japanese Product.

DLC

For years, fans have asked Masahiro Sakurai to bless us with characters that were only in our dreams and he came through. Sakurai brought Sonic, then Snake, Ridley, King K. Rool and Banjo Kazooie. It means the world to have all of these characters (and many others) to be included because of their emotional attachment to the players.

So I’m pleased to announce that Goku will never be in Smash. No character that isn’t a video game character has the possibility of being selected for a character in Super Smash Bros. Now everybody can all just move on with their lives.
